Polish or perish in these tough times,Ugg Boots UK
Since when did Jimmy in accounts receivable start wearing a tie and polishing his shoes so often? And why are the boys in the mailroom wearing suits to work?
With threats of layoffs hanging over offices around the world, employees are mustering every competitive edge they can even if that means pressing their pants and shaving every day.
Casual Friday touted as a cost free employee benefit to elevate productivity and erode boundaries between management and staff isn't cutting it anymore, particularly as the economy weakens.
And,Cheap Ugg Boots, these days, nothing says "I'm your man" like a suit. Their motto: polish or perish.
A variety of influences is conspiring to breathe life back into the men's suit. President Barack Obama, who, like the First Lady, has become somewhat of a fashion icon.
But, mostly, it's the souring economy.
Melissa Austria, who owns the Gotstyle menswear store on King St. W., says twentysomethings are rebelling against their fathers by wearing three piece suits, fedoras and pocket squares.
"Young guys see images of Usher and Justin Timberlake dressed up and they know if they want to mack on girls when they go out, they've got to dress up," says Austria.
To appeal to the pocketbooks of these young men, Gotstyle carries lines such as Toronto based Haight Ashbury. Its three piece suits sell for around $500, she says.
Corey Landsberg, a 23 year old employee of TSN, recently bought his first three piece suit at Gotstyle.
"I didn't want something typical something double breasted with a white shirt. I wanted something off the chart,Ugg Boots UK."
Larry Rosen, CEO and chair of Harry Rosen Inc., says we are entering the year of the suit, and crisp shirts, dress shoes, silk ties and pocket squares are sure to follow.
"Men want to look smart because there is more at risk," he says. "They want to inspire confidence, to look like leaders. They are learning the importance of making a good first impression."
Rosen says he's inspired by the way young men have embraced the suit.
"It's a novelty for them. The 20 to 35 year old is really driving suit consumption."
Suits at Harry Rosen retail from $900 to $7,000. And just two weeks ago, Joshua Yunger, 25, launched a Toronto division of Astor Black, a five year old Columbus, Ohio based custom clothing company that boasts high quality suits at low prices.
Their custom suits are made of fine materials, says Yunger, and the suits are constructed in Hong Kong to keep prices down. Yunger says suits are subject to the vagaries of fashion and now they're definitely "in."
Michael Nguyen operates Fifth on King, a men's custom tailor shop in the heart of the financial district.
"It means a closer and sharper fit, vibrant and unique linings, ticket pockets, surgeons cuffs,Cheap Ugg Boots, handmade buttonholes," he explains.
Nguyen takes it further. "Men like the process involved in buying a custom suit. They just don't like the scavenging behaviour associated with shopping."
So, say farewell to Casual Fridays. Besides,Cheap Uggs Boots, most men never really mastered the balancing act that required them to appear both relaxed and professional.
Sadly, they settled for sloppy. The Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley looked at the phenomenon of Casual Friday two years ago and noted there were legions of young lawyers who "felt entitled" to wear Ugg boots, jeans and clingy T shirts on the job because they needed to be comfortable at work.
But as Gretchen Neels, a Boston communications consultant, told Binkley: "If they want you to dress up like Big Bird every day, for $160,000 a year, just do it."
