Thousands of birds decreasing the Pacific coast from Canada fly over and arrive in local fields and valleys to rest for that winter, making it a bird watcher's paradise in the skies.For 12 years, the Snow Goose Festival has celebrated this arrival. "It's not just about snow geese, it's about all the wonderful birds."Linda Dunkly of Chico said she saw a group of birds within the Llano Seco Unit from the Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge which were "like watching fireworks.""It continued for an hour," Dunkly said from the natural show of dipping and diving birds moving as one. "It really was something.""That's what it's all about," Patten said. "We wish to hear those stories returning."Keynote speaker John Muir Laws is really a professional artist who teaches classes regarding how to draw birds within the field."Birds are really cool because they is going to do all of their life processes in front of you," Laws said. "It's so exciting to have that window."It's not about doing a portrait, he said, but about gathering information. "The procedure for drawing makes you a much better observer."Laws said he thought the festival was also a benefit for the economy of Chico."A festival like this helps a community realize that having a healthy ecosystem also helps the economy of Chico," he said.
