1955 Chevrolet Cameo Carrier
The 1955 Chevy Cameo Carrier was a lightduty truck designed with the style of a passenger automobile. As Chuck Nike jordan remembers, "In our very first designs, the bodysides leaped back flush to the pickup box. The cab and the box were all tied in. There was no seam, zero gap. But then Chevrolet came along and said, no, you can't get it done that way, because it will have too much body torquing, and also tying the whole thing collectively will wrinkle the particular sheetmetal.
"So we redesigned it and put in that space between the cab and the box. There's a kind of overlapping flange and a stainless strip that floods in the seam. "Anyway, the Cameo turned out to be some thing extra, something after dark ordinary. It was the 1st time Chevrolet had done anything like it. And we realized this would never be the highvolume seller. We did not expect to sell lots of Cameos, and low volume intended fiberglass. That's where did they got into the fiberglass parts. Fiberglass let us afford the program. We had the Corvette saying thanks to for that. The Corvette blazed that trail."
The smoothsided Cameo Carrier transported a conventional steel stepside package hidden inside abs plastic, fiberglass outer skins.
