after each episode I?m going to be blogging about the business aspects ? not the BS aspects ? of the show ?Start-Ups? has all the predictable reality TV idiocy but ? just as you can learn cooking techniques from ?Top Chef? or the horrible pitfalls of plastic surgery from ?Real Housewives? ? there are smidgens of startup culture that are worth examining; that we can do so while leveraging the dramatics of six to eight disproportionately attractive white people makes it all the more funThough the first episode was mostly centered around a toga party and two cast members rehashing some dumb e-mail there were brief glimpses of how Silicon Valley (actually) works I haven?t settled on a format for these weekly blogs but this time around we?re going to take quotes from cast members and build from there1) ?We have the best goddamn car search that?s ever existed? ? your rugged-good-looks nerd in discussing his startup CarsabiThere is nothing wrong with confidence In any venture ? startups or otherwise ? you have to believe in what you?re doingBut the mentality that ?We?re the unequivocal best? can actually hurt a startup Drinking company kool-aid causes blindness Competitive companies are doing something right ? or they wouldn?t be competitiveI?ve sat in on meetings where a competitor was dismissed completely because they had a lousy website That?s lazy You gain nothing (but false confidence) by cheerleading the home team Some of the best managers I?ve seen make employees write out all the ways they are losing or develop (factual) competitive matrices Then you have business objectives to work for rather than sitting around high-fiving that you?re the goddamn best2) ?The basic idea is someone trying to lose weight? ? Super angel investor Dave McClure?Ahhh it?s got aspects of that it?s a little more nuanced?Basically what it does is allow you to monitor your life expectancy in real-time? ? Ben WayThis is McClure trying to get a sense of cast members Ben and Hermione Way?s (siblings) business pitch for Ignite a health monitoring application As you might imagine by boasting that their software determines life-expectancy McClure greets the promise with skepticism (and an unsuccessful attempt to suppress a chortle)However the claim speaks to a bigger trend in tech; the idea that if you have mountains of data you can draw a logical conclusion from it Celebrity companies like Facebook and Google catalyze the idea?s spread by claiming that they can guess what you?ll do next ? order pizza e-mail your girlfriend ? based on your online activity and search history and make money off it with appropriate advertisements This notion is taken a step further with outfits like IBM and other computing giants that claim to predict new flooding zones or the future of traffic patterns by letting supercomputers like Watson gobble up all the available data and spit out conclusionsPersonally I?ve been pitched ? as a journalist ? countless numbers of these ?big data analytics? initiatives and have yet to see a single a set of results that made me pause They either explain the obvious (?Twitter sentiment can tell you if something?s popular?) or exist in a theoretical realm that can?t be quantified (?Our analytics will lower healthcare costs by 2025?) And if there are compelling results they are almost always proprietary and companies can?t share them anywayNo doubt McClure is aware of this trend So telling him ?No we don?t help people manage their weight? ? a practical and logical business application ? and instead saying ?We tell them how long they?ll live? ? a claim that?s unprovable (unless you followed around your customers for the next 50 years) is totally self-defeating You want to show your investor that you?ve got an eye on the future but fanciful claims distract a pitch?You don?t need to sweep me off my feet you just need to be a good kisser?
