If you damage your component by static electricity no mean that it stops working immediately. It just damage one or more circuits and after that it is matter of moment when your component drops dead. Many people dont know their parts died simply by ESD because they have not touch them for fifty percent since it was assembled,parajumpers norge.
You have to be very skilful to destroy component by 1 static bolt (it isn't difficult if you dont follow simple rules). Also be aware of airborne dirt and dust.

In your case it is sufficient to ground on your own by touching something grounded (computer case is enough). Also stockings are important. Use only stockings (yes the things in your legs) made of natural cotton. Antistatic bags needs to be good for you as class. If you follow my own advice there is 90% likelihood that you will not damage the components by fixed electricity.

I don't own any mats or wrist bands. I just lay parts on the antistatic hand bags, and usually work on a new wooden surface. Furthermore, i just take some common sense percautions like grounding myself and then for any tools on the side of my case before pressing any components. Didn't shocked anything yet. If I were implementing other peoples computers or was inside my pc everyday I might purchase one. I guess I shall be sorry though if I ever fry an element because of static release  .
