Starring JeanClaude Vehicle Damme and Rob Schneider. Directed by Tsui Hark. (R. 90 minutes. At Bay Area movie theaters.) "Knock Off" is not a complete ripoff.
The brand new JeanClaude Van Damme collaboration together with director Tsui Hark is something of a kaleidoscopic mess of a video, but it has its times.
TriStar Pictures dumped that in theaters yesterday as the last gasp in the summer action movies. A blockbuster the idea ain't.
It contains interest, up to a stage, as a whirlwind show of Hong Kong director Tsui's kinetic thoughts. But all that aesthetic energy, too, ultimately becomes merely hectic.
"Knock Off" is the second motion picture set during the United kingdom handover of Hong Kong to Tiongkok last summer, along with, as in Wayne Wang's "Chinese Field," that traditional background seems practically irrelevant.
The movie works on instead on a stupefying intercontinental conspiracy involving the CIA, the Russians, what was then the Royal Hong Kong Police, gangsters and businessmen caught up in "knockoffs" cheap copies of such items as designer clothes and running shoes.
Vehicle Damme and Rob Schneider, that's becoming a watchable partner for action stars, are usually business partners who learn that the knockoffs are not limited to merchandise people are likewise not what they appear.
Tsui ("Chinese Ghost Story" and Van Damme's "Double Team") of course has a very good feel for the vitality and also flavor of Hong Kong road life, its downtoearth darkish sum houses, packed marketplaces, glitzy accommodations and its twisting and also suddenly steep sidewalks.
The action includes a rickshaw competition through the streets that will begins as a business promotion and transforms ugly, a rooftop cliffhanger, and ef fective use of large cargo containers nudists on cables along with sliding across veranda's.
Tsui employs slow action, stop motion, extreme closeups and staccato blurs among his / her effects, and there's some thing, too, for enthusiasts of explosions and the strangely beautiful colors they could produce.
One series involving the huge Germany Buddha statue on Lantau island is indeed astounding that it practically makes up for its weird use as a Central intelligence agency outpost in the incomprehensible plan, parajumper.
Paul Sorvino, as an threatening figure, has small to do except float ominously in the background. Schneider's character includes a kinky side that's worth some laughs.
This loony history, however, is taken care of seriously for the most part, as if anybody really cared. Bad. The ridiculous issues might have worked in the event that there had been an awareness of methods absurd they are.
1 scene shows what sort of spirit of selfmockery could have helped throughout. Seems someone is grape planting computerchip bombs in knockoff denim jeans, among additional exports, and the audience will be treated to the look of Van Damme ripping off his trousers.
In his films, Van Damme sometimes has felt on the verge of breaking into your ranks of the international superstars, but this one particular isn't going to help considerably. Time is used up.
