Though many reviews simplify The Heat as a "buddy cop film," I found it funnier than just about any other buddy cop movie I've seen. (Because of this film, I'll forever refer to curtains as "window blankets.") Sandra Bullock and scene-stealer Melissa McCarthy head up a fun cast that also includes Tom Wilson (Biff!), Marlon Wayans,??? ???, Jane Curtin and SNL's Taran Killam. Today I have some bonus material from The Heat that shows McCarthy and Bullock goofing off during filming. I've spoken to Feig several times over the years,chanel ??, and he was kind enough to talk to me again about what it was like to work with the actresses: Me: From this clip, it looks like Sandra and Melissa had a lot of fun on the set. Can you think of a moment that made you laugh hysterically while you were filming? Feig: The "Acting Masterclass" reel (on the DVD) is from the scene we did that probably made me laugh the hardest on the set. The genesis of this scene was basically a slugline in the script that simply read "Ashburn and Mullins do shots,www.polio-ni.org/lululemon.html." I originally figured I'd just have them at the bar pounding down shots. But we had just filmed a couple of scenes with the two ladies sitting at the bar, and so I looked around the set and saw that there was a table with a checkerboard on top of it. I figured it might be fun if they were playing shots checkers, so I put down a bunch of shot glasses where checkers would be and told Melissa and Sandra my idea. They both looked at me, underwhelmed, and I went off to work with the cinematographer to light the scene. When we were ready to roll, I walked back onto the set and found the ladies had gotten the prop man to bring over a roll of Scotch tape, and that they had both taped their noses up to their foreheads and Melissa had taped forks onto her fingers. Just the sight of this made me laugh and so I simply said,???? ???, "OK,????????????, let's roll." We did,???????? ????, and the two actresses just started trying to make each other laugh as if they had been drinking for several hours. What transpired was a 12 1/2-minute take that had me in tears as I desperately tried not to laugh out loud and ruin the take. It was their joy at what they were doing and the way they were really laughing at what they were doing, coupled with the inventiveness of how they were trying to make each other laugh. But the moment when we all lost it (and you can hear several of us laugh off camera when you watch the "Acting Masterclass" reel) was when Sandra first pulled up the tape on Melissa's nose and made her talk like a ventriloquist dummy. I was literally in tears. Occasionally I would call out some ideas,???? ??, like "staring contest" and "have a very serious conversation,coach ?????," but nothing I pitched was as funny as what the girls were coming up with in the moment. It's a take of pure comedic invention, and I will laugh out loud to my dying day every time I watch it. Thanks, Paul! Like I said,timberland ???????, The Heat is out on DVD/Blu-ray today.
