The History of the High Heel
Men were the 1st sex to wear the shoe. We were holding adopted by the Eu aristocracy of the Sixteen hundreds as a signal of status. The judgement was: only somebody that didn't have to work may go around in such improper footwear.(Interestingly, this was the same logic in which encouraged footbinding in China.)
Women started putting on heels as a way of trying to appropriate masculine power. In the BBC post on the topic,Elizabeth Semmelhack, whom curates a shoe museum, explains:
They would smoke pipes, they would wear caps that were very masculine. And this is why ladies adopted the high heel it was in an effort to be able to masculinise their outfits.
