Stregheria Italian Witchcraft
Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries had its humble beginnings as an idea of a few artisans and craftsmen who enjoy performing with live steel fighting. As well as a patchwork quilt tent canvas. Most had prior military experience hence the name.
that brought many things to a show and are know for helping out where ever they can.
We expanded over the years to become well known at what we do. Now we represent over 100 artisans and craftsman that are well known in their venues and some just starting out. Some of their works have been premiered in TV, stage and movies on a regular basis.
Specializing in Medieval, Goth , Stage Film, BDFSM and Practitioner.
Patchwork Merchant Mercenaries a Dept of, Ask For IT was started by artists and former military veterans, and sword fighters, representing over 100 artisans, one who made his living traveling from fair to festival vending medieval wares. The majority of his customers are reenactors, SCAdians and the like,Red Sole Shoes, looking to build their kit with period clothing, feast gear, adornments, etc.
Likewise, it is typical for these historylovers to peruse the tent (aka mobile store front) and, upon finding something that pleases the eye, ask "Is this period?"
After a festival's time of answering weighty questions such as these, I'd sleep like a log! Only a mad man could possibly remember the place and time for each piece of kitchen ware, weaponry, cloth, and chain within a span of 1,000 years!! Surely there must be an easier way, a place where he could post all this knowledge.
Traveling Within The World is meant to be such a place. A place for all of these artists to keep in touch and directly interact with their fellow geeks and reenactment hobbyists, their clientele.
The Etruscans were, essentially, the beginning of an entire culture going downthrough the Greeks, Romans and on to modern day Italy. The Etruscansrepresentone of history's most fascinating people. They knew how to write and hadtheirown language. The citiesthey builtare still thriving today,Red Bottom Heels, with slightly different names of course. Each segment ofthe Etruscanuniverse was identified with a chief god or goddess who had a specificarea ofinfluence. Their universe was divided into three major forces: theheavens, theearth and the underworld. Stregheria is theCraft ofthe Italian Witches. It's an ancient system, steeped with History thatdatesback to the 14th century. We are the descendants of an ancient peoplewho usedMoonLore, Omens, Portends, Symbolisms, Herbs, Charms and Spirits (Faery)towork their magick. 'Strega' is an old word, derived from the Latin'Strix' andevery dialect has a word and a legend for it. The word 'strega' inmodernItalian means 'witch' or 'hag'. 'Strix' is also the root word for'strigoaica'or 'strigoi' the Romanian witch and 'shtriga' the Albanian witch. StregheriaresemblesWitchcraft/Wicca in that both systems are Goddess based. The 'Tools'willvary from person to person and the true witch knows that the onlyindispensable'tool' is her/him self. When I call the elements I might use: for North:stones; East: feathers; South: candles; West: scissors. North is Earththerefore I use something that to 'me' signifies the earth. East is Airso Iuse feathers to 'fan' the air around me. Some Strega alsorecognizesa third person, Aradia. She came to be known as the Holy Strega, aspiritualteacher and wise woman. Aradia taught that the traditional powers of awitchwould belong to any who adhered to the way of the Old Religion. Aradiacalledthese Gifts. Written in 1890,Leland spentbetter than 12 years researching Italian Witchcraft. On the night of January 6th (Twelfth Night or the Eve of the Epiphany orLittleChristmas), Befana leaves presents in children's stockings hung upon thehearthor in their shoes placed at the door, a tradition very much like SantaClausassociated with Christmas in America. The children write notes and hidethem upthe chimney for La Befana. The notes or offerings are generally a listof toysor other items that they want La Befana to bring. This time of year isfilledwith singing, rich foods, family, gifts, and helping others in need. I believe that we as humans will come full circle. Meaning,Red Bottom Shoes, we havepassed thrudifferent 'Ages' as the centuries have gone by. If we look to the agesof theMother vs the Father,Red Bottom Heels, we witness patriarchal power that suppressed womenandtook control of every aspect of life. When the Father age gave way tothe Sonage,Louboutin Outlet, the Mother returned to a supporting, nurturing role that the Fatheragekept stifled. The Son did not totally suppress women, but he was stillunderthe influence, guidance, control and manipulation of the Father. Itis kept folded impossibly small and usually tucked into a red case thathas aribbon on it so it can be worn about the neck. Herbs often have several different associations or symboliccorrespondences. Itis the aspect of the herb being used in the spell that will determineitssymbolism. With the introduction of Christianity, many of the Etruscan storiestransformedand became attached to Catholic saints and martyrs. Pagan holy sites andshrineswere rededicated to Christian figures, yet they retained their mysticalquality. Hidden within the Catholic Church, the saints served as thefocus forthe Strega's devotional practices. Each saint was thought to havespecialpowers. Some Strega regarded the saints as 'supernatural' beings whocould beenlisted in their cause or request. The saint I speak of here is not thesameas the saint as known to the orthodox Catholics. The Strega wouldbelieve thatthe saying of a prayer, the lighting of a candle, and an offering are'enough'for the particular saint to intervene. The Catholics would go thru thesameprocess, but they would 'hope' that the saint would aid them. Look to any realItalian/Siciliansection of a large city and you will find these festivals. The statue ofthesaint was carried in a procession or parade thru the streets. There is much talk about the 'degree' system that many traditions use. 'Degrees' are a tricky thing. Some covens require them, somedon't. Someunscrupulous people 'just jump to 3rd'. It is my personal opinion that ourStregaancestors did not have a degree system. I believe they definitely hadwhat Icall a 'pecking order'. The oldest ruled and depending on your age andyourknowledge, is where you stood in line. The Degree system I believe cameby wayof Gerald Gardener. The following is my own personal opinion and from myownexperience. The usual time frame for First Degree can beanywherefrom 1 2 years. A Second Degree initiate has demonstrated that he or she: can safelylead amagical working; possesses the willingness and the capacity to ministerto theneeds of others (this includes mediating and counseling); to work withintheWitch/Wiccan/Pagan community. This means 'running the whole show'!!Preparingrituals, assigning duties, counseling, clergy duties. This time framecan beanother 1 3 years. As I understand it, the 'Wiccan Rede' was never part of the ItalianWitchesbelief, and was not part of the Witchery born in Italy. There are some groups in Italy who have adopted theLaw andRede.
