VASSALBORO Fort Kent freshman Ali Prescott and Ellsworth junior Greg Martin emerged victorious Saturday during the Maine high school individual golf championships held at Natanis Golf Course.
Prescott won the schoolgirl title while Martin claimed the Class B boys top prize. Other state champions were Seth Sweet of Madison in Class C and Mike Arsenault of Gorham in Class A.
Prescott, one of just two schoolgirl players to qualify for the state championships out of the Penobscot Valley Conference, shot a 7overpar 79 on the par72 Arrowhead course to score a threestroke victory over the 2009 runnerup, Karli Soracco of Leavitt of Turner Center,Discount Christian Louboutin, and become the first Fort Kent golfer to win a state title.
Prescott, who shot a 97 during her qualifying round, had scored a 74 at Arrowhead during a practice round earlier last week, and clinched her victory with a birdie on her final hole of Saturday meet.
Laura Grant of Greely of Cumberland Center, the defending champion, finished fifth with a 91.
Martin,Red Bottom Shoes, the sixthleading boys qualifier from the PVC, scored a 5overpar 77 on the Tomahawk layout to edge Lincoln Academy of Newcastle freshman Seward Matel by a single stroke for the Class B title.
Jamie Jackson of Belfast finished in a tie for fourth with an 82,Louboutin Outlet, while Reilly Flanagan of Rockland and Malcolm Oliver of Lincoln Academy were tied for 10th with matching 83s.
Arsenault shot the best round of the day, an evenpar 72 on Tomahawk to win the Class A title by two strokes over Rocco Spicuoco of Deering of Portland. Brewer Joey Bartol was third with a 78, while Hampden Academy Erick Lee tied for 10th with an 82, including a holeinone on the 163yard 13th hole. Lee used a 5iron to record his ace.
