Stop Doing Silly Things
In the 90's when the corporate 'reengineering' phenomenon was at its height, the giant multinational corporation that I was working for at the time had bought into all the pledges and wonderfulness that reengineering would bring to the massive, bureaucratic business.
As part of our continuous journey towards much better understanding and enhanced efficiency, the company arranged a seminar and also brought in a few invitee speakers, experts on reengineering to address and move the troops, and share their wisdom on the process so that all of us minions, (I was undoubtedly a minion at that time) may gain advantage.
As the first Mr. Expert (I wish I really could remember his identify) took the mic he glanced in his watch along with casually remarked that this individual was not sure the reason why the event organizers got given him a new 90 minute position for his presentation and for Q as he did not have really such to say.
The secret to be able to reengineering, and the only issue you need to remember is that this Stop Doing Stupid Things.
He knew, effectively, that in our giant organization you did not must look very hard as well as far to find 'stupid' items we were doing daily. Find a 'stupid' thing (and they are generally obvious and easy to distinguish) and simply stop performing it.
Passing paper close to endlessly, calling get togethers and inviting dozens of individuals so as not to 'offend' anyone overlooked, creating report soon after report displaying fundamentally the same information in slightly different ways had been just some of the basically stupid things that my own corporate finance party engaged in every day.
I know what you are saying, that was ages ago, parajumper, we have now so much better business office tools and technology that make us all easier and efficient. We can share information and collaborate in ways the old reengineering expert wouldn't have dreamed about. Many of us are smarter, and better knowledgeable.
We can't possibly becoming doing as many stupid things as in the past can we? I mean with an increase of global competition along with relentless pressure on sales and profits, if we did stupid things we might be out of business chances are, right?
As 2010 nears, I think it makes sense to take a more honest look at some of your own processes, normal methods for getting things carried out, and things like position meetings and such. Please take a few minutes to ask a simple question Is this great, parajumpers long bear, or is it stupid?
